Basic Concepts about Spirituality and Forms of Evaluation

The definitions of spirituality and religiosity vary in different cultural and religious environments. There is a diversity of concepts without a clear definition, and the term is used inaccurately and inconsistently, which impedes measurement.

The Brazilian Society of Cardiology’s Department of Spirituality Studies and Cardiovascular Medicine considers spirituality “a set of observable and measurable moral, mental. and emotional values that are motivated by the will and guide thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes in intra- and interpersonal relationships”. Spirituality should be valued and is applicable to all individuals, regardless of religious affiliation, including atheists, agnostics and those with no religious affiliation or who do not observe its precepts.
